Family first as Chris Nicholls turns 60

Nancy was well known for many years as a mature-age television model for Joyrene and Robert has been a leader in credit unions and building societies for 28 years. He was CEO Hindmarsh Building Society in the 1980s and he retired from his role as CEO of Credit Union Australia in December 2009. Rob was a director and chairman of the Australian Credit Union support company Cuscal for 12 years until November.

The Nicholls are a loss for SA because Rob’s grandpa and Stan’s father was the Hon Sir Robert Nicholls, Speaker of the SA House of Assembly for a record 23 years through the Sir Tom Playford era. His outstanding contribution to the state saw him serve as a MP for 40 years.

“We are delighted Nancy and Stan have moved near us on the Sunshine Coast so we can all get together far more often and we can support them in their twilight years,’’ says Chris.

Turning 60 had been a catalyst to making far-reaching changes to manage their family’s changing circumstances, she says.

At 85, they are both reasonably healthy, but Nancy has failing eye-sight and Stan has recovered from Prostate cancer.

“I feel the family is the most important aspect of our lives and we have travelled a lot and moved from state to state, but always came home to Adelaide every Christmas to be with family,” says Chris.

“Our son Cameron and daughter Julia used to also visit Nancy and Stan in Adelaide several times a year – now they can come  up here and we will all see each other more often.’’

There is still plenty of chutzpah in Nancy and Stan, who insisted in attending Chris’s 60th birthday at Molly Molones hotel in Courtney Place Wellington…so at 84 years of age, they had to apply for passports and flew to Wellington and stayed for a week.

Rob continues to be a role model and human resource for credit unions. In January he took on a temporary role as Acting CEO  of the NZACU board to assist with and a  new structure and finding a new  CEO.  He will remain on the board when his term ends June 6 and he returns to Doonan.

Hi Elayne, Thanksfor above. How do you know Chris? I met her doing the Mrs South Australia Quest where she organised all the models for the parades and then we had our sons together and have been friends since. Nadine

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR CHRIS, I must say I find it absolutely impossible to think of you as 60 years old, thats just plain crazy. You certainly look decades younger in any case. It would be lovely to catch up one of these days. Much Love Marie xxx
